Burlington House

Situated in the leafy Chiswick district, we reinvented this once-dark and compartmentalised West London home through clever spatial rearrangements and a clean, neutral palette.

The client – a longstanding resident of the area – fell in love with the charming property and reached out to De Rosee Sa to redesign the home through both the architecture and interior design. The Edwardian house sits on a picturesque tree-lined street amongst a row of semi-detached houses. While the home – which sat completely untouched throughout its life – was in dire need of intervention, it also presented a great deal of character through original features including ornate fireplaces, high ceilings and detailed mouldings.

The brief called for a complete overhaul, with particular attention to a sun-filled rear extension that housed an open-plan kitchen and dining area, alongside an enhanced primary bedroom suite and an unconventional entrance. We widened the space at the back of the home through a ground floor, L-shaped infill extension, while retaining the side pathway and the side entrance into the new boot room. This offered our client a functional open-plan space at the rear, along with a larger primary bedroom and a new study on the third level.

We didn’t completely deconstruct the original footprint; instead, we opened some of the rooms and shifted certain design elements to improve the flow and how the client moves through the space. One such intervention was the relocation of the original staircase over from the left to the right of the hallway. This increased the amount of natural light into the entrance and created a more formal landing, instead of walking down a narrow corridor.

Before arriving at the new extension, the original portion of the home honours its heritage through ornate mouldings and cornices. As the client is an avid reader, we created a home library alongside the living room with a piano and bespoke bookshelf. The olive-green boot room signifies the transition between old and new. Here, more bespoke joinery allowed for a custom bench seat with coat hooks and plenty of storage. As you pass through this transition space, the new kitchen and dining area are revealed. Courtesy of a level change in the extension, the rear addition naturally feels akin to a breath of fresh air. Three steel-framed doors invite the natural landscape in, resulting in a dynamic home with a newfound emphasis on light and openness.
