Wolverhampton Central Library, Wolverhampton - by Penoyre & Prasad*
1998-2003
Description: Refurbishment and alerations to the Grade II* listed Library.
Having undertaken the Children’s Library within the building in 2000, Penoyre and Prasad subsequently worked on the design for the refurbishment and a new extension to the Central Library. With the intention of putting libraries back at the centre of the community, the proposed design reconfigures the Library by increasing floor space through the addition of a new wing and a new covered glass atrium at the rear of the existing Library. The atrium proposal is bold in turning the orientation of the library toward the rear but it links together the original building and the new wing. It also means the Library can integrate itself into the new Learning Quarter Masterplan, located at the rear of the Library. The original library was opened in 1902, commissioned to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Silver Jubilee, with a grant from Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish founder of US Steel.
