FKB Terminal 2 & Parkhaus 3, Bonn/Koln Airport, Germany - by Murphy/Jahn*
1996-99

Description: New international terminal to existing airport and new parking block.

The practice worked on Terminal 2 to increase the airport’s capacity to 7.5 million passengers per year. A new prefabricated steel and glass terminal has been built on an exposed substructure, creating a transparent roof and wall envelope. Together with the simple linear organization, this creates a clear concept to arriving and departing passengers, facilitating horizontal and vertical passenger movement.

Parkhaus 3, a new facility for long term parking, provides 4,350 new car park spaces. Simple steel structures are clad in stainless steel mesh to form the facades of the external walls and internal courtyards. Eventually the facades will be covered in vines, which have been planted at their base, to introduce green vegetation as a contrast.
