Collier’s Gardens, Fishponds, Bristol BS16 - by Penoyre & Prasad*
2003-06
Description: Extra Care Sheltered Housing for the elderly.
Situated on leftover backlands between suburban houses, the scheme is designed to make efficient use of the awkward site. Key to the design is the ‘communal route’ that forms the main circulation spine from which the private flats are accessed. The route widens at certain points to create top lit ‘internal squares’, which house communal activities such as a hairdresser, a laundrette and an IT room and spaces for meeting and relaxing. The variation in the communal route, as well as the careful use of materials, banishes any sense of institutionalism.
